L-Carnitine
L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that plays an essential role in the body’s energy production. Found primarily in the muscles and heart, L-carnitine is involved in transporting long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria of cells, where they can be oxidized to produce energy. This process is crucial for cells that require a lot of energy, such as those in the muscles and heart.
Our bodies can produce L-carnitine from the amino acids lysine and methionine, though it’s also obtained through foods, especially red meat, fish, and some dairy products. L-carnitine has various forms, including acetyl-L-carnitine and propionyl-L-carnitine, which have slightly different functions in the body.
Because of its role in cellular energy, L-carnitine is also commonly studied for potential uses in exercise and metabolism-related applications, as well as in fields of aging and cardiovascular research.
